Nature on Kelley's Island.... If you sat in the camp all weekend, well you missed out!! Kelley's Island State Park is located right next to the 4H camp, Glacial Grooves, North Pond sanctuary, the East Quarry(Fossil beds), and the Beach park!!! Mr Dan and I started our walk at North Pond, and walked into the woods on the plastic-board broadwalk, there to protect the delicate wetlands under it. This manmade path leads through the woods, onto the beach, wooded trails and back to the pond (levels up and down with rainfall.) We stopped for lunch on the far point of the beach and were soon joined by several species of gulls, a weird looking leaf creature, and a small erie snake (non-poisonious). The water was chilli, but you could paddle in it and look for shells and interesting rocks. After an hour of exploring the lakeshore, We headed back into the woods and back to the road, which we crossed and up the embankment by the parking lot and into the Quarry. We went down the side about 200feet on a steep path and into the basin, which was filled with ancient ocean fossils. We found some smaller samples, and 2 anmial skulls which we packed carefully for later study. After a few hours of nosing over rocks and exploring the quarry bed, we headed back to camp for the pot luck dinner. Kelley's has so much diversity.. you just need to get out and look!! |
